Announcing:

Top of the Heap 2011:

Ashcan Studio of Art Scholarship Competition

“Art cannot be separated from life.”

                                                       Robert Henri 1865 – 1929

(founding artist of the original Ashcan School*)

Ashcan Studio is proud member of New York City’s diverse community.  We believe that talented students deserve recognition for their creativity.  We want to give back by investing in the youth of our community while maintaining a student body that mirrors New York’s variety. We hope to follow in our namesake’s footsteps and address similar concerns that The Ashcan School* did though their painting a hundred years ago. These artists were concerned with issues of urban inequality and the hardships of the working class. We hope to give an opportunity to students who would, under usual circumstances, be unable to attend an intensive and nurturing visual arts program like Ashcan Studio of Art. Our Scholarship Program helps to maintain a diverse, unique and supportive community for young artists to develop their talent and education.  With these goals in mind, we present deserving students with annual scholarship awards. Through an open call process and visual arts challenges, students have a chance to prove their artistic prowess to gain financial aid towards the in-depth study of their passion in the visual arts.

*The Ashcan School was a group of artists in the United States that were active from 1908 -1918. The movement was concerned with daily urban life and was considered shocking at the time because of its artists’ choice to depict working class people.  They celebrated the beauty in the everyday and defined beauty as truth. The Ashcan artists were interested in depicting this truth through reality, even the sometimes unpleasant underbelly of that reality.
